Gas vs. Electric Vehicle Cost Calculator

Is an electric vehicle cheaper to drive? Compare estimated gasoline and electricity costs using your own driving habits and energy prices.

Your Driving Details

Your Cost Comparison

Gas Vehicle — Annual Fuel Cost—
Electric Vehicle — Annual Electricity Cost—
Annual Energy Cost Difference—
Five-Year Energy Cost Difference—
Gas Vehicle — Cost per Mile—
Electric Vehicle — Cost per Mile—

This calculator compares gasoline and electricity expenses only. It excludes vehicle purchase price, financing, insurance, repairs, maintenance, taxes, charging equipment, and depreciation. Five-year estimates assume unchanged mileage and energy prices.

How are gasoline vehicle costs calculated?

Divide your annual mileage by your vehicle's miles per gallon, then multiply by the price per gallon.

Annual Gas Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ MPG) × Gas Price

How are electric vehicle costs calculated?

Multiply annual miles by the EV's energy consumption per mile. Then account for charging losses and multiply by your electricity rate.

Annual EV Cost = (Annual Miles × kWh per 100 Miles ÷ 100) ÷ (1 − Charging Loss Percentage ÷ 100) × Electricity Rate

Does charging location matter?

Yes. Home charging rates can differ substantially from public fast-charging prices. Enter the effective electricity price you expect to pay, or a weighted average if you charge in multiple places.

Are electric vehicles always cheaper?

Not necessarily. Electricity prices, gasoline prices, vehicle efficiency, charging losses, and annual mileage all affect the comparison. A full ownership-cost comparison must also consider purchase price, depreciation, insurance, maintenance, and other costs.
